She’d have no idea he was there, but his abrupt extraction might have caused her a twinge of pain, like a rubber band snapping back."

Victor and Alex: "Neither man was under the illusion that they would break through any significant barrier. Neither was trying to kill the other. Given the level of skill on both sides, it would take a fatal exchange for one of them to succeed. This was not a death match. At best, it was the mental equivalent of a little shoving and a thrown fist."

Manny helping Sara: “Yeah,” Manny responded with a mouthful. “It’s too easy to deplete your stores of energy. Once you get going in a sustained Psi environment, you’ll need at least three to five thousand calories a day.” He gave a sidelong glance to Alex, then looked back at Sara and lowered his voice conspiratorially. “That’s why he's getting love handles. He’s not around us enough anymore.”

Alex helping Sara sleep: "He was a whisper in her mind. Unlike all the mental conversations she’d had up until now, she understood the meaning of his thoughts without the weight of language. Wrapped in slow, gradual sensations were prompts and suggestions. It was as though he was caressing her mind. With each pass, she felt her body drain and relax. At one point, she realized she moaned audibly and started to speak, but her consciousness sank deeper."
